Scanning

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008679

The process of systematically moving a sensor or detector across a target area to collect data over a spatial extent. In atmospheric remote sensing, this technique allows instruments to build up a two-dimensional image or a series of measurements across a wide swath. Weather radars perform scanning to map precipitation, while satellite radiometers scan to observe cloud patterns and atmospheric temperatures.
