Volume scan

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002998

  1. A sequence of radar observations where the antenna systematically changes its elevation angle while rotating, collecting data from multiple atmospheric layers. This process creates a three-dimensional representation of precipitation and atmospheric phenomena within the radar's range. A typical volume scan might involve 5 to 15 different elevation angles.

  2. A radar scanning strategy in which sweeps are made at successive antenna elevations (i.e., a tilt sequence), and then combined to obtain the three-dimensional structure of the echoes.
