Sweep

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009464

A single, complete scan of the atmosphere by a radar antenna at a constant elevation angle. During a sweep, the radar transmits pulses and receives backscattered energy as the antenna rotates 360 degrees, collecting data on reflectivity, velocity, and other variables. A volume coverage pattern is composed of a series of sweeps conducted at progressively higher elevation angles to build a three-dimensional picture of the atmosphere.
