Swell
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002728
Ocean waves that have traveled away from their generating area, characterized by a more regular and organized pattern compared to locally generated wind waves. These waves have longer wavelengths and periods, and their height gradually decreases as they propagate across the ocean. Swell can travel thousands of kilometers and arrive at distant coastlines.
Wind-generated waves that have travelled out of their generating area. Swells characteristically exhibit smoother, more regular and uniform crests and a longer period than wind waves.
