Decay distance

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004882

The distance that ocean waves travel as swell from the edge of their generating area to a given point. It is a main input to classical wave forecasting methods such as the Sverdrup-Munk-Bretschneider scheme, since swell height at the point falls as the decay distance grows and the longest-period waves arrive first. The region this distance spans is called the decay area.
