Angular-spreading factor

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003519

The ratio of the wave energy actually present at a point to the energy that would be present there if the waves had not spread out laterally. Because spreading dilutes swell energy as it leaves the generating area, the factor is less than one and falls with distance from the source. It enters classical swell forecasting, which estimates the height of waves reaching a distant shore from a storm.
