Angular-momentum balance

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003518

An application of the principle of conservation of angular momentum to the atmosphere, stating that the rate of change of a fluid parcel's angular momentum is equal to the sum of torques acting upon it. In the global atmosphere, a balance exists between the eastward momentum generated in the tropics and the westward momentum generated at higher latitudes. This balance is maintained by the poleward transport of angular momentum by atmospheric circulation systems like Hadley cells and mid-latitude eddies.
