Angular momentum

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003512

A vector quantity measuring the rotational motion of a body or fluid parcel about an axis, equal to the product of its moment of inertia and its angular velocity. In the atmosphere the Earth's rotation supplies a large planetary part, so air moving poleward without torques spins up and gains westerly wind. The atmosphere's total angular momentum is approximately conserved, apart from exchange with the solid Earth through surface friction and mountain torques.
