Relative angular momentum
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008500
The angular momentum of a parcel of fluid or an air mass with respect to a rotating coordinate system, such as the Earth. It is a measure of the rotational inertia of the parcel relative to the local frame of reference. This quantity is conserved in the absence of external torques and is a key concept in understanding the dynamics of atmospheric vortices like hurricanes.
