Inertial instability

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006519

A type of atmospheric or oceanic instability that occurs when the absolute angular momentum of a fluid parcel decreases with increasing distance from the axis of rotation. This condition allows parcels to move away from their initial position, leading to an amplification of disturbances. It is often associated with strong horizontal shear in rotating flows.
