Dynamic instability

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005205

A condition in a fluid flow where small perturbations grow exponentially, leading to a rapid change in the flow pattern. In the atmosphere, this can manifest as baroclinic instability, which leads to the development of extratropical cyclones, or shear instability, which can generate turbulence. This type of instability is governed by the conservation of momentum and energy.
