Helmholtz instability
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006224
A type of hydrodynamic instability that occurs at the interface between two fluids moving at different velocities, or within a continuously sheared fluid. This instability leads to the formation of waves that can grow and break, creating turbulence. Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds are a visible manifestation of this instability in the atmosphere.
