Kelvin-Helmholtz instability
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010581
A fluid dynamic phenomenon that arises at the interface between two fluids or two layers of the same fluid moving at different velocities, or when there is a density difference across the interface. This instability manifests as waves that grow in amplitude, often rolling up into characteristic overturning billows. It is frequently observed in atmospheric cloud formations, such as cirrus or stratocumulus, and in ocean currents.
