Helmholtz free energy

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006223

A thermodynamic potential that measures the maximum reversible work obtainable from a closed system at a constant temperature and constant volume. It is defined as the internal energy of the system minus the product of its temperature and entropy (A = U − TS). In atmospheric thermodynamics, it is less frequently applied than Gibbs free energy, which is defined for constant pressure and temperature conditions more typical of the atmosphere.
