Kelvin wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010580
A large-scale wave in the ocean or atmosphere that is influenced by both gravity and the Coriolis effect, causing it to be trapped along an equatorial or coastal boundary. In the atmosphere, equatorial Kelvin waves propagate eastward and are a primary mechanism for transporting energy and momentum, influencing weather patterns. These waves are a key component of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle in the Pacific Ocean.
Fluctuations in wind speed at the ocean surface at the Equator result in eastward propagating waves, known as Kelvin Waves. Kelvin Waves cause variations in the depth of the oceanic thermocline, the boundary between warm waters in the upper ocean and cold waters in the deep ocean. They play an important role in monitoring and predicting El Niño episodes.
