Equatorial wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005430
An ocean or atmospheric wave that is trapped near the equator by the effect of the Earth's rotation. The Coriolis force, which is zero at the equator and increases with latitude, acts as a restoring force that confines the wave's energy to the equatorial region. Major types include Kelvin waves, Rossby-gravity waves, and mixed Rossby-gravity waves, each with distinct propagation characteristics.
A set of oceanic and atmospheric waves whose dynamics are confined to the region near the equator. Their behavior is governed by the vanishing and change of sign of the Coriolis parameter across the equator, which acts as a waveguide. These waves, including Kelvin and Rossby waves, transfer energy and momentum across ocean basins and are integral to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle.
