Equatorial waveguide

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005431

A region in the atmosphere and ocean centered on the equator where wave energy is confined. The trapping mechanism is the change in the Coriolis parameter from negative in the Southern Hemisphere to positive in the Northern Hemisphere, which acts to refract wave energy back toward the equator. The effective width of this waveguide is typically about 15 degrees of latitude.
