Equatorial deep jets
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005419
Alternating eastward and westward zonal currents found in the deep ocean along the equator, extending thousands of meters below the surface. These jets are typically narrow, with widths of a few hundred kilometers, and exhibit periods ranging from months to years. They are thought to be generated by the interaction of equatorial waves with topography or by instabilities in the mean flow.
