Blue jets
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003959
Upward-propagating electrical discharges that emanate from the top of active thunderstorms into the stratosphere. These transient luminous events are distinct from lightning, appearing as narrow cones of blue light that can reach altitudes of 40 to 50 kilometers. They are thought to be initiated by strong electric fields above the storm cloud.
