Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009166
A large-scale electrical discharge that occurs high above active thunderstorms, extending upwards into the mesosphere and lower ionosphere. These transient luminous events are red or orange-red and appear as faint, diffuse flashes or columns, lasting only a few milliseconds. Sprites are triggered by positive cloud-to-ground lightning strokes and are part of the global electrical circuit.
