Transient luminous event

Brief, high-altitude electrical discharge phenomena that occur above active thunderstorms, extending into the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. These events include sprites, blue jets, and elves, which are distinct from lightning within the troposphere. They are typically observed for milliseconds to seconds and are studied using high-speed cameras.
