Transient eddies
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010817
Circulations in the atmosphere that are mobile and evolve over time, representing departures from a time-averaged flow. These eddies are responsible for much of the poleward transport of heat and momentum in the mid-latitudes. On weather maps, they appear as the familiar migrating high-pressure and low-pressure systems that cause day-to-day weather changes.
