Mode eddies

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007353

Coherent, rotating vortices of water in the ocean that are dynamically associated with specific vertical structures, known as baroclinic modes. These mesoscale features are distinct from the mean flow and are particularly effective at trapping and transporting water with specific properties over long distances. Mode eddies are closely linked to the formation and erosion of mode waters, which are thick layers of ocean water with nearly uniform temperature and salinity.
