Neutral mode

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007523

A normal-mode solution of a linearized stability problem that neither grows nor decays, so its frequency is real. The parameter values at which a mode is neutral form the neutral curve that separates stable from unstable flow, as in analyses of baroclinic waves or of shear flows. A mode with growth is unstable, and one that decays is damped.
