Unstable wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009901
A wave in a fluid system, such as the atmosphere or ocean, that grows in amplitude over time. This growth occurs when energy is extracted from the mean flow or from potential energy within the system, leading to an amplification of the disturbance. Baroclinic waves in the mid-latitude atmosphere are a common example of unstable waves that lead to weather systems.
