Potential instability
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008084
A condition where a layer of air, though stable or conditionally unstable in its initial state, becomes absolutely unstable if lifted to saturation. This occurs when the equivalent potential temperature decreases with height within the layer. It is a key factor in the development of deep convection and severe thunderstorms.
