Convective instability

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004671

A state of the atmosphere where a layer of air, while stable with respect to dry adiabatic ascent, becomes unstable if lifted to saturation. This occurs when the lapse rate of the equivalent potential temperature decreases with height. If such a layer is lifted, it can become conditionally unstable, leading to deep moist convection.
