Thermal instability
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009584
A condition in the atmosphere where a parcel of air, if displaced vertically, continues to move in the direction of the displacement due to buoyancy forces. This occurs when the environmental lapse rate is greater than the adiabatic lapse rate, leading to vigorous vertical air motions. Thermal instability is a prerequisite for the development of thunderstorms and deep convection.
