Neutral atmosphere

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007521

An atmospheric state where a parcel of air, if displaced vertically, experiences no net buoyant force and tends to remain at its new level. This condition occurs when the environmental lapse rate is equal to the dry adiabatic lapse rate for unsaturated air or the moist adiabatic lapse rate for saturated air. It signifies a lack of vertical instability or stability.
