Neutral equilibrium

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007522

A state of atmospheric stability where a parcel of air, when displaced vertically, experiences no net buoyant force and remains at its new position. This occurs when the environmental lapse rate matches the adiabatic lapse rate of the parcel. In this condition, there is no tendency for the parcel to return to its original level or to continue its displacement.
