Stable air
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009173
Atmospheric air that resists vertical motion, meaning that an air parcel displaced vertically will tend to return to its original position. This condition occurs when the environmental lapse rate is less than the moist adiabatic lapse rate, or when there is a temperature inversion. Stable air often leads to stratified clouds, fog, and poor visibility.
