Stable air mass
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009174
A body of air in which a parcel of air, if displaced vertically, tends to return to its original position. This condition occurs when the environmental lapse rate is less than the moist adiabatic lapse rate for saturated air, or less than the dry adiabatic lapse rate for unsaturated air. Stable air masses are typically associated with clear skies, light winds, and poor visibility due to trapped pollutants.
