Critical gradient
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004760
The specific vertical temperature lapse rate at which an air parcel, when displaced, remains in neutral equilibrium with its surroundings. If the actual lapse rate exceeds the critical gradient, the atmosphere is unstable, and if it is less, the atmosphere is stable. For dry air, this is the dry adiabatic lapse rate of approximately 9.8 °C per kilometer.
