Superadiabatic lapse rate

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009397

A condition in the atmosphere where the environmental lapse rate, the rate at which temperature decreases with increasing altitude, is greater than the dry adiabatic lapse rate. This indicates that the atmosphere is extremely unstable, as a parcel of dry air rising would cool more slowly than its surroundings. Such a lapse rate often occurs near the ground on hot, sunny days, leading to strong convection.
