Pseudoadiabatic lapse rate

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008192

The rate at which the temperature of a saturated air parcel decreases with increasing altitude during a pseudoadiabatic process. This rate is less than the dry adiabatic lapse rate because the latent heat released during condensation partially offsets the cooling due to expansion. It is a key parameter for assessing atmospheric stability and predicting cloud formation, typically ranging from 4 to 9 °C per kilometer.
