Environmental lapse rate
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000875
The rate at which the actual temperature of the atmosphere decreases with increasing altitude at a given time and location. This rate is measured by instruments such as radiosondes and varies significantly with atmospheric stability and weather conditions. A typical average value for the troposphere is about 6.5 degrees Celsius per kilometer.
The rate of decrease of air temperature with height, usually measured with a radiosonde.
