Critical level
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004762
A specific altitude in the atmosphere where the phase speed of an atmospheric wave matches the mean flow speed. At this level, wave energy can be absorbed or reflected, leading to wave breaking or momentum deposition into the mean flow. This phenomenon is particularly relevant for gravity waves and planetary waves.
