Critical discharge

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004757

The maximum flow rate that a channel or conduit can pass under conditions of critical flow for a given specific energy. This state occurs when the Froude number is equal to 1, meaning the flow velocity matches the propagation speed of a small surface wave. Exceeding this discharge without an increase in energy head is not possible, often leading to a backup of water upstream or a transition to supercritical flow downstream.
