Critical velocity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010453

The specific speed at which a fluid transitions from laminar to turbulent flow, or vice versa, within a given conduit or boundary layer. In meteorology, this concept can apply to the onset of turbulence in atmospheric boundary layers or the transition of flow regimes over terrain. It is often characterized by a critical Reynolds number.
