Turbulent flow
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009848
A fluid motion regime characterized by chaotic, stochastic property changes, including rapid variation of pressure and velocity in space and time. It features swirling regions of fluid known as eddies, which are very effective at mixing momentum, heat, and mass. The transition from laminar to turbulent flow is determined by the Reynolds number, with the transition in a pipe typically occurring when this dimensionless quantity exceeds 4000.
