Eddy
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000834
A circular or swirling motion of air or water that deviates from the general flow of the fluid. Eddies form when fluid flows past an obstacle or when two adjacent fluid streams move at different speeds, creating shear. They are a primary mechanism for the transport of heat, momentum, and moisture in the atmosphere and oceans, occurring at scales from millimeters to hundreds of kilometers.
Swirling currents of air at variance with the main current.
