Turbulent boundary layer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009846
The layer of fluid adjacent to a solid surface where the flow is turbulent and momentum transfer is dominated by chaotic eddy motions. Within this layer, velocity profiles are fuller and flatter compared to those in a laminar boundary layer, indicating more effective mixing. The atmospheric boundary layer, extending from the Earth's surface up to about one kilometer, is almost always a turbulent boundary layer due to surface friction and heating.
