Friction velocity
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005791
A scaling velocity used in boundary layer meteorology to characterize the turbulent shear stress at a surface. It is derived from the square root of the kinematic momentum flux and represents the intensity of turbulent mixing near the ground. Friction velocity is a key parameter in models of atmospheric transport and dispersion.
