Characteristic velocity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004258

A representative velocity scale used in fluid dynamics to non-dimensionalize equations and analyze the behavior of flows. In atmospheric science, it can refer to the typical speed of a weather system, the mean wind speed in a boundary layer, or the propagation speed of atmospheric waves. For turbulent flows, the friction velocity is a common characteristic velocity.
