Velocity defect law

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010834

A principle describing the velocity profile in the outer region of a turbulent boundary layer, away from the surface. It states that the difference between the free-stream velocity and the local mean velocity, when scaled by the friction velocity, is a universal function of the distance from the surface normalized by the boundary layer thickness. This law, along with the law of the wall for the inner layer, provides a complete description of the velocity profile in the atmospheric boundary layer.
