Velocity profile
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009970
The variation of fluid velocity across a given cross-section or with height above a surface. In the atmosphere, it describes how wind speed and direction change with altitude, especially within the planetary boundary layer. This profile is influenced by surface friction, atmospheric stability, and pressure gradients, and is measured by instruments like anemometers on towers or remote sensing devices.
