Characteristic length
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010424
A representative length scale used in dimensional analysis to normalize physical equations and simplify the study of fluid flow and heat transfer. It is chosen based on the geometry of the system or the dominant physical process. For example, in pipe flow, the characteristic length is often the pipe diameter, while for an airfoil, it might be the chord length.
