Buoyancy length scale
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004085
A characteristic vertical length over which buoyancy forces significantly influence fluid motion, particularly in a stratified atmosphere or ocean. It represents the distance a parcel of fluid must travel vertically for its buoyancy to become comparable to its initial kinetic energy. This scale is derived from the Brunt-Väisälä frequency and vertical velocity fluctuations.
