Rossby radius of deformation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008610
A characteristic length scale in geophysical fluid dynamics that represents the distance over which rotational effects become comparable to buoyancy effects. It defines the horizontal scale at which a disturbance in a rotating, stratified fluid can adjust to geostrophic balance. This radius is proportional to the internal wave speed and inversely proportional to the Coriolis parameter.
