Geostrophic adjustment

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005941

The process by which a fluid system, such as the atmosphere or ocean, responds to an initial imbalance between the pressure gradient force and the Coriolis force. This adjustment involves the generation of waves that propagate away, leaving the system in a new, more geostrophically balanced state. The timescale for this adjustment depends on the spatial scale of the disturbance and the Rossby radius of deformation.
